The basic idea and the theory behind it

The basic idea behind SILM® is that we can understand different ways of thinking and being in simple terms as having a "mental gearbox" and that we can change "mental gear" to do different things.

In business, sometimes we need to be logical and plan, other times creative to come up with new ideas, and at other times we need to work with our emotions to increase motivation or cope with setbacks. Having a "mental gearbox" allows us to change "mental gear" and be flexible, to look at things from different perspectives, to use the right gear for the task in hand or situation.

Having the conviction (emotion) that your business idea is brilliant and cannot fail does not guarantee success. It is sensible to change mental gear, use the Logic mode; has anyone done this before? How are they doing it? Nearly half a million pounds was invested in this business that failed. The questions were asked, but the answers not listened to, conviction was not enough.

The theory behind the idea
The fundamental idea is that conscious experience can be underpinned by different mental and physical processes. Hence we can be "in different mental gears" at different times. Conscious experience reflects the struture of the human brain. There is no physical structure in the brain that is the seat of consciousness, rather, it is an emergent phenomenon.

The Genes to Cognition website has a 3D model of the brain that identifies different areas of the brain and associated processes.

Different structures within the human brain may dominate conscious experience alternately. As the dominant structures may change so too can the nature of conscious experience.

However, our personal world reflects our experience of the World into which we are thrown.

Thus the structure of the brain shapes our feeling and sense of things, but our Being is within the World.
